Cubism in the Waikato Times

New Zealand sub-editors really are the gift that keeps on giving.

In last night’s Waikato Times, a brief item on former UK health secretary Patricia Hewitt’s son being busted for possession of cocaine reported that:
police saw him throw a plastic bag containing a cube-sized lump of the drug out of a car in North London.

Wow. How much would a cube-sized lump of coke be worth? Loads and loads, I bet.

  2. I was wondering how much a lump-sized cube would be worth.

I think Chad T is over there at the moment - he might know.

  3. Is there a new trend in journalism to leave out the most important word in the sentence? Or is the trend to take another word in the sentence and change it so the sentence becomes meaningless? Sugar lump-sized? Cube-shaped lump?

Either way, it's not the size of the lump that's salient, it's its weight; the air between the crystals being, in most jurisdictions at least, free and legal. I'll stop there on the grounds that I might incriminate myself.

  4. Chris, I have no idea what you're talking about. Crystals - is that some sort of New Age thing?
