How J.K. Rowling writes her novels

I thought I was on Boing Boing for a moment (and that's a compliment).

It has to be said, Excel is fine for rows and columns of numbers but isn't much use for text. I tried maintaining a submissions spreadsheet in Excel but found it unwieldy. Someone, somewhere probably has an open source app that's perfect for writing novels and managing submissions...
