Cormac Herley of Microsoft Research answers the question, “Why do Nigerian
scammers say they are from Nigeria?” (The PDF of his paper is here:
it’s a fascinating and entertaining read). It’s blindingly obvious once he
points it out. Money quote:
By sending an email that repels all but the most gullible the scammer gets the most promising marks to self-select, and tilts the true to false positive ratio in his favour.
