The city of Wanganui should be officially renamed ‘Whanganui’, the New Zealand Geographic Board ruled today.This wasn’t an issue that concerned me at all, though I did think – and it appears that the Geographic Board agrees – that the local iwi may have a better idea of how to spell the place names thereabouts than the English settlers ever did.
The Geographic Board’s decision was unanimous.
But the basic principle here is that anything which annoys Michael Law must be good.

Very good. I think we should all use this new spelling from now on. Or, as they say in the media, going forward.
